Bachelor Degree

The education

The sound engineering course was created in 1949 based on the ideas of the founder Erich Thienhaus. This degree offers a double-qualification in natural sciences and music.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Broadcasting degree at the Erich-Thienhaus-Institute of the Hochschule für Musik Detmold aims to further develop and steer the musical, scientific and technical talents of students in order to prepare them for the tasks entailed in being artistic recording directors of both art and popular music productions and audio-visual media productions, including acoustic irradiation. The course consists of the following three parts:

  1. musical: tuition in theoretical and practical music subjects
  2. scientific: mathematics, electrical engineering, digital technology, acoustics and other subjects tailored to the course
  3. practical: imparting of basic knowledge and gaining of practical experience with all studio technology equipment. All types of recordings and productions.

The traditional job description of sound engineers as artistic recording directors of music productions is continuously expanding, which is attributable to the increased integration of multi-media technologies. This means that the profession "sound engineer" nowadays also applies to the theatre, film and television media, where competent professionals with a trained ear are often needed in the sound department. Changes in the media landscape are adequately taken into consideration within the framework of the music broadcasting course.

The complementary subjects for music transfer students extend with varying weightings over the duration of the studies. Alongside the major subject of executive production, it encompasses the following artistic practical subjects: main instrument, piano, singing specifically a second instrument, choir singing, playing in the orchestra (facultative) and score playing. The compulsory subjects to be studied for musicology and musical theory are musical and technical aural training, music theory, musicology, scores and literary studies, intereperative studies, LP critique, analyses/stylistics as well as musical scores and instrument studies.

Mathemetical-natural science subjects as mathematics, the science of electricity, room accoustics, vierpol theory, electronic accoustics, musical accoustics, commnicaion engineering, digitial techniques, audio engineering, music transfer/audio equipment, accoustic irradiation as well as film and television production constitute the core course content of the studies.

Aptitude Test

  • Major Subject Music Transmission:

The musical and technical differentiating capabilities are to be determined by means of sound examples of serious as well as Pop music, and by subsequent evaluation in a questionnaire (with instruction) Tasks on interpretation comparison, on musical arrangement (tempo, articulation, casting etc), as well as technical moments (mono, stereo, switching of side etc). Duration ca 60 minutes.

  • Music Literature: In a colloquium with the commission of up to 15 minutes duration, style typical classification of scores are to be demonstrated and hereby sufficient basic knowledge about composers and music literature starting at the Renaissance up to the present is to be shown.

  • Technical Section: Mathematical and Physic's questions and problems will be tested (of matric standard), in order to take into account the varying levels of existing knowledge of the applicants at the future grading. Duration about 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Second Instrument

    1. If Piano is not a major subject, higher standards will be expected from the second instrument. Recital of two piano works of a middle degree of difficulty from the literature of varying epochs (for example: J.S. Bach: French Suites; Haydn: Sonata g-moll; Chopin: Waltz a-Moll; Bartok: Sonatine)

    2. If Piano is a major subject the second instrument is optional. It can only be taken though, if existing knowledge has been demonstrated in an aptitude test and if the study capacity of the university allows for it. Two easier works, each from varying style epochs are to be recited with a minimum degree of difficulty of "Lower Grade" standard.

    3. For Vocals, the vocal ability will be determined by the recital of a folk or an easy art song.

  • Music Theory / Harmonies:Advanced knowledge of the dur-moll-tonal harmonies, written test of up to 45 minutes duration: Composition of a numbered bass, a two voice polyphone and four voice homophone song or choral set. The written test will be complemented by an oral-practical test of 10-15 minutes duration at the piano with cadence play.

  • Listening Skills: Testing of natural talent and preparatory training. Written Test of about 60 minutes duration: Meters, putting tone series into rhythm, interval and chord dictation, two voice set, melodic memory test, change of tones in free tone sounds, recognition of rhythmic and melodic mistakes, complemented by a oral test of up to 15 minutes duration.
