„Where‘d you go to school“
„In Detmold.“
„Where??“
„Near Bielefeld…“
„But Bielefeld doesn‘t exist... Hihihi“

This or a similar conversation takes place in which one tries to describe one's place of study in more detail to the ignorant. Detmold is the ideal place to study. Detmold is located in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. It is said that the Lippe people were driven out of Swabia a long time ago because they were too frugal. Maybe this is the reason why the rents are very cheap in comparison to the rest of Germany, for us students this is wonderful!

In Detmold the bicycle is the new car since it takes a maximum of five minutes to get to most places. In the city centre there are numerous clothing stores, drugstores, the inevitable discounters and supermarkets, and on three days a week the Detmold weekly market beckons with fresh products from the region.

For a city of this size, Detmold has an amazing amount to offer culturally; in addition to the many concerts of the university, there are a number of events in Hangar 21 on an old military site. The jazz club "Red Horn District" is between Horn-Bad Meinberg and Detmold with its great concerts, and in the warm season a number of various festivals take place in the city centre. Furthermore, as students we have the opportunity to attend all performances of our Landestheater, a four-part theatre with a varied program, free of charge.

A special highlight is the largest open-air museum in Germany. And as befits a royal town of a principality, Detmold naturally has a castle including a park, which - in addition to the palace garden at the university - invites you to hang out and do nothing.

Those who want to do sports will find numerous beautiful jogging routes, several sports fields, and an indoor swimming pool including a sauna. In summer, four outdoor pools invite you to take a refreshing dip. In addition, the AStA offers several sports groups (e.g. football, handball, etc.)

On days off, the Teutoburg Forest offers a lot of hiking trails, for example to Externsteine or Hermannsdenkmal, a monument well known beyond the city limits. And after an eventful day, you are always welcome in one of the rustic pubs for one or more beers.
