Re­search is car­ried out at the Erich-Thi­en­haus-In­sti­tut in vari­ous areas. Since the found­ing of the in­sti­tu­te, the re­search res­ults pub­lished at con­fer­en­ces and in es­says or books have formed an es­sen­tial basis for the con­tem­por­ary and well-foun­ded train­ing of sound en­gin­eers. The study of re­search meth­ods and their ap­plic­a­tion con­tin­ues to be a fo­cal point in the mas­ter's and doc­tor­al pro­grams in mu­sic­al acous­tics.

Re­search at the ETI cur­rently fo­cuses on the acous­tics of mu­sic­al in­stru­ments, in par­tic­u­lar the bas­soon and the singing voice, au­dio tech­no­logy, mu­si­cians' health, and the in­ter­ac­tion between room, mu­si­cian, and listen­er.

In the field of re­search, the ETI co­op­er­ates with Ger­man and in­ter­na­tion­al mu­sic academies, uni­versit­ies, and col­leges. In the fields of mu­si­co­logy (Uni­versity of Pader­born), acous­tics and sig­nal pro­cess­ing (RWTH Aachen), and mu­sic­al acous­tics (In­sti­tu­te for Vi­en­nese Sound Style) there are joint re­search pro­jects as well as mas­ter theses and doc­tor­ates. Sem­inars and sym­po­sia on cur­rent top­ics are held with­in the frame­work of the DEGA tech­nic­al com­mit­tee "Mu­sic­al Acous­tics" and the VDT de­part­ment "Re­search and De­vel­op­ment." In re­cent years, sev­er­al EU pro­jects (Mar­ie Curie In­teg­rated Train­ing Net­work) and DFG-fun­ded pro­jects have been car­ried out.
