Research is carried out at the Erich-Thienhaus-Institut in various areas. Since the founding of the institute, the research results published at conferences and in essays or books have formed an essential basis for the contemporary and well-founded training of sound engineers. The study of research methods and their application continues to be a focal point in the master's and doctoral programs in musical acoustics.
Research at the ETI currently focuses on the acoustics of musical instruments, in particular the bassoon and the singing voice, audio technology, musicians' health, and the interaction between room, musician, and listener.
In the field of research, the ETI cooperates with German and international music academies, universities, and colleges. In the fields of musicology (University of Paderborn), acoustics and signal processing (RWTH Aachen), and musical acoustics (Institute for Viennese Sound Style) there are joint research projects as well as master theses and doctorates. Seminars and symposia on current topics are held within the framework of the DEGA technical committee "Musical Acoustics" and the VDT department "Research and Development." In recent years, several EU projects (Marie Curie Integrated Training Network) and DFG-funded projects have been carried out. An overview of current and past projects can be found on the ETI research project page.
Some publications and research projects are summarised in the ETI research news:
